Event Details & Abstract: 

The human microbiome is a collection of up to 100 trillion microbial symbionts that live on each of our bodies, outnumbering our "human" cells by as many as ten to one. Recent advances in DNA sequencing have led to a dramatic expansion in our ability to understand the human microbiome and the factors that influence it, including diet, geography, age, and even pets. The Human Microbiome Project explored a small number of these; recently, we launched American Gut, the largest crowdsourced science effort to date, which brings these technologies to the general public and will greatly increase our understanding of what is "normal" and "abnormal". Here I discuss recent findings about the human microbiome, complemented by model organism work in mice, and describe prospects for using the microbiome for personalized medicine.
