Event Details & Abstract: 

Oxides have traditionally focused attention in condensed matter physics because of exotic low temperature properties, but have been recently considered for future room temperature electronics. This talk will communicate recent insight gained from material-dependent solid-state theory on a number of basic questions surrounding such properties. (i) What prevents most oxides from being doped and how can this be overcome (ii) Can oxides be turned into transparent conductors (generally a mutually-contradicting proposition) even without doping (iii) Can topological insulators be made from oxides (iv) How can insulating and non-magnetic oxides be combined to produce conducting and magnetic interfaces? (v) 2dimensional electron gas (2DEG) lurking in three dimensional bulk oxides?
