Abstract: Flash processing, discovered first in the context of sintering in 2010 is sprouting new directions for basic research and innovations in technology. For example, (i) diffusion of atom species is enhanced by up to seven orders of magnitude, (ii) new phases that belie conventional phase diagrams are pin-pointed, (iii) new materials, far from equilibrium; for example, high conductivity graphene infused copper is produced. On the fundamental side evidence is growing that the state of flash is in fact a solid-state-plasma within which these unusual phenomena occur.
