LASP at 75: The Past, Present, and Future of Space Science

The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado Boulder was founded in April 1948, a decade before NASA. It is the university’s oldest and highest-budget research institute, and the only academic research institute in the world to have sent instruments to every planet in our solar system. Today, LASP is on a mission to transform human understanding of the cosmos by innovating new technologies and approaches to space science.

As LASP begins the celebration of its 75^th anniversary, join us for a public lecture reflecting on the history of the laboratory by LASP Director Dan Baker. He will be joined by Senior Research Scientist Fran Bagenal, who will discuss where—and who—we are now, emphasizing workforce and demographic issues in the Earth, space, and planetary sciences. Pam Millar, LASP’s first deputy director for strategic development and communications, will then conclude the lecture by looking to the future as LASP continues to expand the frontiers of space exploration.

This lecture marks the beginning of the 75th anniversary of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder. The one-hour lecture, presented by three speakers, will discuss the past, present, and future of the laboratory as it looks ahead to another 75 years of innovation and impact.
