Microsoft Office Installation Info for CU License Program
Last Modified: April 1, 2013 - Alan Dunwell
These instructions are for installing Microsoft Office, either the Pro2003, Enterprise2007, Office2010 versions. For any of these you must be installing onto a machine in the CU subnets, or onto a home machine or laptop that is used for CU related work.
Before installing you must access the ITS web pages and log in with your CU IdentiaKey. You may then see the installation keys and use the appropriate one for your installation. Go to
https://cuservices.colorado.edu/microsoft/?SelectAccessData=true
and follow the prompts. After navigating to the window with the license Keys, keep that window open. [Note that for Office 2010 the installation is supposed to authenticate off the Campus Wide License Server so a key is not supposed to be needed. See notes further down about that.]
1) It is assumed that most workstations in JILA will already have MSO installed locally. It is probably best to uninstall the older version.
2) Go to
N:\Win\MS-Office-CU
and the descend into the appropriate subdirectory and locate the Setup.Exe file. Double click that to start the installation.
OfficePro2003:
- It will prompt you for the Installation Key. Cut and paste each piece from the previously opened ITS page.
- Enter your name (and initials if you desire) and JILA for the company name.
- accept the license screen
- select the radio button for Custom Install
- select all components and click the checkbox for “Choose Advanced...”
- click on the top level Microsoft Office icon and select “Run all from my computer”
- expand the “Office Features” and click on “Office Assistant” (a.k a. “Clippy”) and select “Not Available”
- in the pre-install screen, look it over to make sure it is as you wish and click Install.
- It will whirl a while and then display a completion screen with some check boxes. Unless you use Internet Explorer as your default browser do not select the one for checking the web for updates. MS does not allow Firefox or Opera to access their update sites, only IE is “blessed” enough for that. See the instructions further down on getting updates.
Office Enterprise2007:
Enterprise will install in parallel with OfficePro, but it is suggested that you delete Pro before installing Enterprise.
- It will prompt you for the Installation Key. Cut and paste each piece from the previously opened ITS page.
- accept the license screen
- select the radio button for Custom Install
- select all components and click the checkbox for “Choose Advanced...”
- click on the top level Microsoft Office icon and select “Run all from my computer”
- click Install Now
- It will whirl a while and then display a completion screen with some check boxes. Unless you use Internet Explorer as your default browser do not select the one for checking the web for updates. MS does not allow Firefox or Opera to access their update sites, only IE is “blessed” enough for that. See the instructions below on getting updates.
Office 2010:
This version of Office, if installed on a machine that is on a CU subnet, does not need a license key. It will, or at least is supposed to, authenticate off the CU server. Just follow the instructions for 2007 above but you won’t need to have a key.
We have found that some machines refuse to authenticate from the server and ITS seems uninterested in figuring out why. For such machines, or if you are installing for a laptop or a home machine, then just follow the instructions for 2007 above for the installation except you won’t be prompted for the license key in the installation. Do the reboot after installation. On first start of an office application like Word you will see a pop-up screen saying that authentication failed. Click the button to enter a new key. Use the key found in
N:\Win\MS-Office-CU\Office2010\MSO2010Data.txt
to make a local authentication. Close the application and restart it. This time it will again say that it is not authenticated but will offer to let you authenticate via the web. Do so and it will phone home to Microsoft and bless your machine. Thereafter it should not bother you again.
Office 2013:
This version will detect any previous versions and allow you to upgrade or install in parallel. It doesn’t ask any further questions if you select to upgrade but uninstalls the previous version and installs 2013. It will request a reboot at the end.
Check for Updates:
After the installation you need to go to MS and check for updates. Use Internet Explorer only to go to
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx
and click on the Check for Updates link. It may be necessary to install various Active-X controls, Genuine Advantage, and other Microsoft Spyware in order to get to the update pages. It will check your machine and then search for updates and display the list of available updates. Checkbox the ones you want and click on the Agree and Install button. Some of the updates may be initially dimmed and unavailable until other patches are applied, you may need to loop through several times to get all the updates. I don’t bother to do a Restart on the computer till I’ve installed all the updates.
Restart again and log in again. With OfficePro, if you need of the Equation Editor edit the Menu Bar with right-click and Customize and select the Commands tab. Select a Category of Insert and then look for the Equation Editor item in the right side of the window. Click and drag it to the real Insert menu and drop it somewhere such as after Symbols. Exit the Customize window. Start the Equation Editor and make sure it does not complain about fonts. Test it by typing a letter, then selecting an “Embellishment” of an overstrike arrow.
You will also need to check/reset the Macro option under Tools, Options, Security Tab, Macro Security button, click the radio button for Medium. This will prompt the user and they can decide on a case by case basis.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
When you try to run the installer there are various things that can go wrong:
- The machine is Win98 or older. The OS must be at least WinXP.
- Office 2010 fails to connect and register with the campus License Server. See the installation instructions for 2010 above about using a local license key.
