RevTeX Abstract Styles Now Available:
The style files and ReadMe files for the RevTeX abstracts, both standard and invited, are now included in all the TeX/LaTeX installations at JILA (node jila02 excluded). All of our central installations of TeX/LaTeX will find the style files at compile time. The ReadMe files explain how to use these styles and how to obtain the .tex files distributed for each abstract. Please review them. The files have the names
ReadMe.abs apsab.sty ReadMe.inv apsabinv.styTo see the ReadMe files and the style files look in
Node Location JNOV LAN \\jnov\sys\sysapps\SW25\tex\macros\revtex JILA, JILAV1 DISK0A:[SOFTWARE.TEX314.INPUTS.REVTEX] jilasrv /apps/teTeX/texmf/tex/latex/revtex jilau1 /central/TeX/lib/inputs/revtexCase is unimportant except for UNIX nodes. Node jila02 has not been included since all installations are frozen on that node.
Please contact me if you encounter any problems using these styles on any of the machines. Feel free to copy the style files to your own installations or ftp-download them as described in the ReadMe files. Thanks go to Art Phelps for bringing these to my attention. (aad)
UNIX File Server and Status of Services:
A Request to Users of JILA's UNIX Central and Distributed Systems
JILA UNIX central and distributed systems will be served by a new file server, which will provide applications such as emacs, netscape, mathematica, idl, ispell, matlab, tex/latex, xmgr, rasmol and xmol, xv, printing services, and many other applications. There are utilities for converting Macintosh binhex files to other formats, for converting Fortran to C, finding telephone and room numbers for colleagues (jwho (JILA only), 411 (CU campus)), and more.
Initially, the new server will serve JILAU1 and those distributed DEC Alpha hosts which get their software centrally. Soon this will also apply to the SunOS host computers supported by JILA as well. A number of JILA's research group DEC Alphas have already been switched to this new server, including the atom, dana3, fermion, jarrett, jilack, marmot, and super workstations. The software on the new server is current and includes new versions and more software than previously available. As soon as we receive Mathematica 3.0 for Digital UNIX, this will be installed on the new server.
JILA02 will not be using the new server since it is using an old, unsupported operating system, and is being phased out, with services being taken over by JILAU1. JILA02 will continue, for a time, to use the old software which it has been using for several years. All users with accounts on JILA02 have accounts on JILAU1. No new accounts are being given out on JILA02.
We are upgrading the UNIX .login and shell-startup files (.cshrc and .tcshrc) so that all software will be available by invoking a script which we can update without users having to make changes. Of course, users will still be able to customize their .login, .cshrc, .tcshrc files as usual. These 3 files work together and so we are asking all users on jilau1 to help us prepare to switch them to the new .cshrc, .tcshrc, and .login files as described below. These new files are new and improved and offer nice advantages such as non-creation of core files, good printer aliases and explanatory comments.
We will be making the switch on jilau1 to file serving by the new server as soon as we can. If you have never changed your .login, .cshrc, or .tcshrc files, then we will save your old files and supply you the new versions of these files, when we switch to the new server and you need do nothing further. IF YOU HAVE CUSTOMIZATIONS of your own which you wish to keep, then we need you to do the following on jilau1 (not jila02):
(NOTE: the directory jilau1:/central/doc/fileserver/ has more material about the fileserver. In particular the file "fileserver_switch.txt" in that directory has this news item.)
1. Login to jilau1 (ALL UNIX users with accounts on either jila02 or jilau1 have accounts on jilau1).
2. Type ls -lasg | grep ".*.jilasrv"
to see if you already have the files:
.cshrc.jilasrv .tcshrc.jilasrv .login.jilasrv
3. If you do have these files, and if you want to have customizations concerning your path, aliases, etc., MAKE SURE that you have these customizations included in them. Please check with Chela Kunasz, Anne Hammond, or Alan Dunwell if you have your own aliases or locations for applications. Most people should not need these in the future.
4. If you do not have the files listed in step 2., then
either type the command below on jilau1:
copy_server_files
or, on distributed systems which are not already using the new server or for those who want to know the details:
cp /central/skel/.cshrc.jilasrv ~username cp /central/skel/.tcshrc.jilasrv ~username cp /central/skel/.login.jilasrv ~username
where username stands for your login (e.g. jsmith).
Then, edit these 3 files if desired. PLEASE read the comments and look for the recommended places to insert your customizations. The most important areas are the definition of the "path" and "MANPATH" variables and the section beginning with "CUSTOM MODIFICATIONS" for your aliases.
When the time comes for the switch, we will move the .cshrc.jilasrv into place, saving your old .cshrc, and similarly for the .tcshrc and .login files. More details about what will be different, available software and other topics are found in files in the directory jilau1:/central/doc/fileserver.
If you have accounts on both jilau1 and on one or more distributed workstations, you will need to do this on both jilau1 and on your workstation. Anne Hammond will be working with users who need to have .cshrc, .tcshrc, and .login files which will work for several operating systems (e.g. those whose home directories may be on an Ultrix system but who also log in to DEC Alpha Digital UNIX systems).
DO NOT move the new .cshrc.jilasrv, etc. files into place as .cshrc, etc. yet. Just make sure you have the three files named in item 2. above in place in your home directory. When the time comes for the switch to the new server, users who do not have these files in place will automatically get our generic new versions.
Our goal is to better serve JILA with our new fileserver. Our wish is to provide software for both DEC Alphas and Suns in a seamless way that is not too difficult and time-consuming to support. We hope we are meeting your needs.
Please email unix@jila with questions or to request help.
