PHYS 5770 Gravitational Theory (General Relativity) Spring 2008: Syllabus
Content
The intention in this course is to emphasize the applications.
We will cover the mathematics that is required,
but with a clear view that the purpose of the mathematics
is to allow you to understand the applications.
The aim is to cover three major applications of general relativity:
-
Black holes – the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom, and Kerr-Newman metrics
-
Cosmology – the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric, and its perturbations
-
Gravitational waves – in flat space and cosmology
Grading
Grading will be weighted as follows:
Problem Sets | 60% |
Midterm | 20% |
Final | 20% |
