In this repeating movie clip, you see the pattern of illumination by an X-ray flare above the accretion disk near the central black hole of an active galaxy. Colors indicate velocities of the disk (redshift and blueshift). The illumination appears first as a spot on the redshifted side of the disk, then as a growing ring that is distorted by gravitational lensing.
