Start up a spreadsheet program like Excel and go to the "open" command under the file menu. Depending on how smart your spreadsheet program is you may be asked for instructions on how the program should interpret the file. Just keep clicking on the "OK", "Next" or "finish" buttons and everything should work out fine.
The spreadsheet should look some thing like this. on.
The important thing is that each category of information is in its own column. If it isn't, try opening the text file with the spreadhseet again and make sure the file is opened as "Delimited" and not "fixed width" and that the delimiter is "tab" not "space." If you still have trouble ask someone nearby for help or come to office hours. Notice that the absolute magnitude columns and radius columns are empty. We will be filling them in in this assignment!
Once the spreadsheet is open, use the "Save as" command under the pull-down File menu to save your table as a "workbook" or other kind of file. If you continue to save it as a "delimited text" file, formula information and chart information will not be saved!
