Event Details & Abstract: 

The solar magnetic cycle is the main source of variability in the solar system and a window into how magnetic cycles operate in other stars. One of the biggest obstacles we face for understanding the solar cycle (and the dynamo that drives it) is our lack of information regarding the structure and evolution of the internal magnetic field. However, it is clear that the most important aspects of the solar cycle can be connected to observable phenomena in the solar surface.

In this presentation we will discuss how detailed analyses of sunspot groups (the optical signature of large bipolar magnetic regions) can be used to understand the evolution of the large-scale magnetic field buried underneath the solar surface, reconstruct the Sun's past activity, and lay the foundations for an better understanding of the solar extended cycle by taking advantage of DKIST observational capabilities.
