Event Details & Abstract:

Diode lasers are compact, robust optical sources with a broad range of applications in physics research. However, a major limitation is the incomplete wavelength coverage of commercial laser diodes. In this talk, I will present a design for a general purpose temperature-tunable external cavity diode laser that incorporates thermoelectric cooling and water cooling, allowing single mode laser operation over tens of nanometers. I will discuss the theory of thermal load management and present results from temperature tuning of a 633 nm diode below 617 nm, a wavelength range relevant to trapping of sodium and diatomic molecules and laser cooling of beryllium ions for quantum information processing.
