Event Details & Abstract:

Observed peculiar over- and under-luminous type Ia supernovae argue for their progenitors to be significantly super- and sub-Chandrasekhar respectively. I will discuss the possibilities of forming white dwarfs with limiting mass significantly deviated from Chandrasekhar's limit. This will be obtained by exploiting the power of magnetic fields (of different origin) in white dwarfs. If time permits, I will also explore the effects of modified Einstein's gravity to resolve this issue.
