Event Details & Abstract:

Why doesn't a bicycle just tip over? Despite being a popular mode of transportation for over 200 years, a full understanding of bicycle dynamics still eludes physicists. We will argue that this is because there is no single essential effect, but many effects that interact in complex ways to bring about stability. This paper analyzes two stabilizing design parameters for a modern bicycle and examines how their contributions affect the velocity range over which a bicycle is self stable.
