JILA technical support services are offered exclusively to JILA Fellows and Members and their groups. These services support a broad range of research and educational goals. The close interaction between JILA's technical staff and research scientists, visitors, and students is a hallmark of the Institute.
The JILA Computing Services staff manages central servers and cluster computers; supports a local area network of distributed workstations, PCs, Macs, terminals, and printers; and installs and maintains network connections from offices and labs to other campus systems, the Internet, and national supercomputer centers.
The electronics shop staff provides design, fabrication, and repair of specialized laboratory electronics, as well as consultation and training courses in electronics principles and techniques. The staff manages an electronics parts storeroom and maintains a pool of high-quality electronic test equipment that can be borrowed.
JILA has one of the most comprehensive instrument shops available anywhere. Instrument shop staff designs and fabricates a wide range of state-of-the-art experimental apparatuses and offers training courses in the use of shop equipment. The shop's four main areas are Precision Instruments, the Glass Shop, the Cleaning Room and the Staff Shop.
The Keck Lab encompasses both the optical metrology lab and JILA's Class 1000 and 100 cleanroom. The metrology lab is a shared facility for optical characterization, scanning probe and light microscopy, and education on the lab's laser optics table. The cleanroom is a user facility for micro and nano fabrication, and houses JILA's two scanning electron microscopes.
The Science Communications Office supports both JILA's scientific mission and its outreach efforts. The office prepares research highlights and news stories for the JILA website and quarterly JILA Light & Matter newsletters; websites for JILA and the JILA Physics Frontier Center; and websites for scientists and selected conferences. The office provides scientific writing & editing, web design & development, scientific illustration & animation, and graphic design.
