Spin relaxation and dynamics in a mesoscopic superconductor

Event Details & Abstract: 

Conventional Superconductivity and Ferromagnetic order are two competing groundstates. However at the interface between a ferromagnetic and superconducting material on a short lengthscale (typically 10-100 nm) they coexist originating new  quantum matter. Electron transport in nanoscale devices and mesoscopic circuits allow to address the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of such artificial electron matter which rapidly vanishes in bulk.After reviewing some key results where the exchange interaction is shown to modify the superconducting wavefunction generating singlet  pi-wave or triplet odd-frequency superconductivity, I shall mainly focus on the dynamics of itinerant spins in presence of Cooper pairs. In particular, I shall present two recent experiments in which we observed: 1) resonant dynamical coupling between spin and (superconducting) phase dynamics and 2) spin-charge separation in mesoscopic Aluminium.
