The climate system will be discussed from the viewpoint of condensed matter physics, with a particular emphasis on the atmosphere. Atmospheres are a form of condensed matter, and many interesting phenomena of condensed matter systems are realized by them. Essential physics of the general circulation can be illustrated with idealized 1-layer and 2-layer models of the atmosphere. Non-equilibrium statistical mechanics can be used to directly ascertain the statistics of these models. Live demonstrations of models, and their statistical mechanical solutions, will be performed. Possible effects of polar amplification, due to the melting of arctic sea ice, on the storm track will be discussed in this context.
