Event Details & Abstract: 

Physical systems with strong interactions have long frustrated theorists, who are unable to turn to the traditional tools of perturbation theory for a solution. Recently, string theory — a theory designed to unify gravity with quantum mechanics — has produced evidence that black holes living in higher dimensions can provide a "holographic" description of certain strongly coupled phenomena, including systems related to quantum chromodynamics (the theory of the strong nuclear force) and the "strange metals" that include high-temperature superconductors, opening up a new avenue to exploring these fascinating systems. We describe these developments and some hopes for the future.
