Visiting Fellows Program

This competitively awarded program provides financial support to internationally prominent scientists for the purpose of strongly collaborative visits to JILA. To promote the strength and value of these scientific interactions, this program requires a minimum stay of 2 weeks (with typical durations of 1 month), and with longer stays of up to 6 months possible. Each Visiting Fellow would be encouraged to interact with multiple research groups in JILA and to present a general colloquium early on in the visit at a level that is accessible to the wide range of research interests in JILA.

Financial Support: Each Visiting Fellow will receive a stipend of approximately $1,250 per week to cover local expenses and per diem. In addition, JILA will provide reimbursement for the cost of an economy round-trip airfare to and from the visitor's home institution.

Application: Each prospective visitor should submit a statement of purpose describing what the visitor hopes to accomplish during the visit, what special resources or facilities may be needed, and the value that the visit would provide to the JILA research programs. In addition, the application must include the applicant's curriculum vita, and a list of Fellows to whom the application should be directed. In order to maximize overlap with the JILA Fellows, efforts will be taken to spread the timing of the visits over the period of January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020.

Deadline: We are currently accepting applications for visits contained within the 1 year period January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020.  Applications should be received by November 1, 2019.

Evaluation Criteria: Each applicant will be evaluated using criteria that include the quality of the applicant's research proposal and the overlap of that research with the programs in the institute. Consideration will also be given to how the requested dates fit with the programmatic goals of spreading out the visits, and the availability of funds.  Final decisions on those invited to become a JILA Visiting Fellow are made by the JILA Fellows with written invitations typically issued by the JILA Chair.
