One of the simplest reactions in chemistry is that of a molecule with an electron to form an anion. While this reaction may sound trivial, the chemical physics of the process in isolation is anything but and the spectroscopic probes for such reactions are limited. I will provide a new perspective by initiating such reactions with a photon and will show the new insight that such probes offer. This will be exemplified in electron capture processes that have biological relevance in electron transport chains to electron driven chemistry in the interstellar medium.
