The surface states of topological insulators are generally held to be `protected’ against localization by disorder. However, this `protection’ only really holds true for non-interacting systems. When disorder and interactions are simultaneously present, then the surface states can be localized, as we have recently realized. In this seminar I will explain how localization by a combination of disorder and interactions works, and will discuss some of the remarkable phenomenology that can arise in disordered interacting topological insulator surfaces
