Celebration of Life and Special Conference Session to Honor Art Phelps

A Celebration of Life for Fellow Art Phelps will be held at JILA on February 22, 2013, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in rooms X317 and X325. The longtime JILA Fellow passed away on December 14, 2012. The celebration of his life will be hosted by Phelps' adult children, Joanie Gilbert and Wayne Phelps.

In honor of Phelps' great scientific legacy, the Executive Committee of the Gaseous Electronics Conference has planned a special session of the upcoming conference, which will take place Sept. 30–Oct. 4, 2013 in Princeton, New Jersey. The session is titled "The Scientific Legacy of Art Phelps." It is tentatively scheduled for 1:30–4:00 p.m. on Friday Oct. 4. Session presenters include Stephen Buckman, The Australian National University; James Lawler, University of Wisconsin; John Lowke, CSIRO, Australia; Zoran Petrovic, University of Belgrade, Serbia; Leanne Pritchard, University of Toulouse, France; and Kunihide Tachibana, Osaka Electro-Communication University, Japan.

Arthur Phelps was born July 20, 1923, in Dover, New Hampshire. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas in 1944 and a second Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of Florida in 1947. He earned a Sc. D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1951.

Phelps came to JILA June 1, 1970, and served as a JILA Fellow until Sept. 30, 1988. He served as JILA Chair from Jan. 1, 1979 through Dec. 31, 1980. After his retirement from NIST in 1988, he was elected a JILA Fellow Adjoint and held this position until his death.

Art Phelps will be remembered for his contributions to science and for his quiet and thoughtful demeanor.
