Event Details & Abstract: 

Optical-parametric oscillators (OPO) allow the generation of tunable continuous-wave (cw) and pulsed light with similar properties as laser light. The spectral coverage of OPOs can be broad in comparison to other laser-light sources. It is determined by the optically nonlinear crystals used and the design of the OPO cavity. The talk gives an overview of the operation principle of OPOs and a summary of tunable laser-light sources that employ OPO technology. Performance data of a recently developed cw OPO system (C-WAVE from Hübner) is presented: the spectral coverage is 450 – 650 nm and 900 – 1300 nm and the output power is in the range 200 – 1200 mW. The system has been developed as an alternative to dye lasers. Application results are presented from first studies conducted with C-WAVE in atomic physics, single molecule spectroscopy, and the characterization of integrated optical devices.


Niklas Waasem completed his PhD in Physics at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Physical Measurement Techniques (IPM) in cooperation with the University of Freiburg in 2013. During his Master and PhD programs he has been working as a guest scientist at the University Autónoma de Madrid and at Stanford University. Since 2014, Niklas works for the German company HÜBNER and is responsible for the business development of the product line C-WAVE.
