Event Details & Abstract: 

It is often remarked that the phase diagrams of strongly correlated electronic materials are complex. But in what sense are these materials—e.g., manganites and the cuprate, pnictide, heavy fermion and ruthenate unconventional superconductors—complex systems, rather than merely very complicated? I will discuss two of three ongoing experiments in my lab that attempt to use the tools of ultracold atomic physics and quantum optics to investigate aspects of these phase diagrams typically regarded as complex, addressing what we may learn by doing so.
