Speaker Name(s):

Jeremy Darling

Speaker Affiliation(s):

University of Colorado
Seminar Type/Subject

Event Details & Abstract:

I will discuss the general ideas behind precision astrometry and spectroscopy and apply these ideas to four topics:(1) the proper motion and distance of the Andromeda Galaxy,(2) identifying gravitational wave-kicked post-merger "wandering" massive black holes,(3) "real-time" cosmology using secular redshift drift and quasar proper motions, and(4) constraining the very low frequency stochastic gravitational wave background.These topics also bear on dark energy and physical constants, and are a preview of work planned for 30 meter optical telescopes and the Gaia mission.
