Research Interests
Photonic, plasmonic,
opto-electronic and quantum-electronic devices, such as photovoltaic cells, solid-state light sources or optical memory, are all governed by the underpinning electronic structure of their consititunent materials. The way that these materials interact with external radiation is vitally important to the device performance. Moreover, the constituent (semiconductor, metal or composite) materials can be processed on
a nanometer scale. Nano-structuring strongly modifes the light-matter interactions,
leading to new physical phenomena that can be explored and exploited. Future light-matter devices will most likely be made from multiple materials, each with their own unique optical and electronic properties to be studied in basic and applied research.
Excitation of novel optical materials with pulsed lasers provides a 'snapshots' of the light-matter
interactions, hence recording the dynamics with ultrafast precision.
Laser excitation can also be used to coherently pre-condition (or control)
the electronic states of the materials. Therefore, the opto-electronic response
of a nanostructure can be coherently tailored to select individual quantum
processes in these often complicated condensed-matter systems.
My research interests include the use of ultrafast spectroscopic techniques to
observe and control light-matter interactions in nanostructured photonic, plasmonic, opto-electronic and quantum-electronic systems.
