Achieving picosecond time resolution with high spatial resolution is a key component. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) features atomic resolution, however it is lacking fast temporal resolution. The slow mechanics of the oscillating cantilever (<1MHz) is an apparent limiting factor. Our approach to high temporal resolution by using ultrafast laser systems in combination with ultra high vacuum AFM will be presented. The experimental results are supported by an analytical solution found for the limit of time resolution in fm-AFM.
