Event Details & Abstract:

Plasma systems both in Nature and in the Lab have the remarkable ability to convert energy between forms. Dynamos convert flow energy to magnetic energy, magnetic reconnection explosively releases stored magnetic energy and accelerates and heats particles, plasma accretion disks release gravitational energy in the form of heat, jets and magnetic fields and so forth. Studying processes like dynamos, reconnection, shocks and accretion at astrophysically relevant dimensionless parameters the lab requires new techniques only now becoming available. I will give an overview of experiments being pursued in the Wisconsin Plasma Astrophysics Laboratory that focus on energy conversion between forms.
