The overall Kinect experience is made possible by the seamless integration of hardware and software. The cumulative impact of sensors, computation, software and applications represents breakthroughs in not only in each of the individual components, but in the entire ecosystem. Kinect is a complex system consisting of several imaging modules, an illumination module, a microphone array, and several microprocessors all put together with a precision mechanical system. In this presentation, I will describe design, validation, manufacturing, test requirements, procurement requirements and challenges in the system and subsystems with a special emphasis on the development of the optical systems. A key focus will be on the use of components and subsystems which a few years ago were beyond state-of-the-art and are now being produced economically in quantities of millions. Delivering a cutting edge user experience, while developing new technologies, complicated the product development process beyond measure. The design has not only proven to be exceptional for its primary use of game play but has also been exploited for many applications beyond even the imaginations of its creators. Discovering what was required to make it all work will be surprising.
