The biophysics of behavior from cellular patterns to animal movements

Event Details

Event Dates:

Thursday, August 30, 2012 - 10:00am

Speaker Name(s):

Joshua Shaevitz

Speaker Affiliation(s):

Princeton University
Seminar Type/Subject

Event Details & Abstract:

From wildebeest herds to enzymatic reactions and every scale in between, active motion is a hallmark of the phenomena of life. I will discuss two experimental efforts in my group to probe the motion of living organisms. The first half of the talk will deal with the collective motility of social bacteria where we find that cells tune their trajectories to form complex structures made of thousands of individuals. The second half of the talk will introduce our attempt at data-driven definition and classification of animal behaviors in fruit flies.
