The Dynamics and Afterglow Radiation of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Seminar type:
Astrophysical & Planetary Sciences
Date:
Monday, September 24, 2012 - 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Location:
JILA Auditorium
Speaker:
Andrew MacFadyen
Speaker Affiliation:
NYU
Event Details:
Gamma-ray bursts are cataclysmic explosions associated with the collapse of a massive star or the merger of compact binary systems. They produce ultra-relativistic jets which drive strongly beamed blast waves into the interstellar medium. I will discuss recent progress in understanding the dynamics of these blast waves and the radiation they produce.
