Scientific Visitors to JILA
JILA supports an eclectic and innovative research program that fosters creative collaborations between JILA scientists and scientists across our nation and world. Collaborations play a key role in the pioneering research of JILA and is supported by the following programs.

JILA Visiting Fellows Program.
This competitive program provides financial support to prominent scientists for the purpose of collaborative visits to JILA for a minimum stay of six weeks up to one year.
- Financial Support. Each Visiting Fellow will receive a stipend of approximately $4,000 per month, before taxes. In addition, JILA will provide reimbursement for the cost of economy round-trip airfare to and from the visitor's home institution. .
- Application. Each prospective visitor should submit a research plan describing what the visitor hopes to accomplish during the visit, what special resources or facilities would be needed, and the value that the visit would provide to the JILA research programs. In addition, the application must include 3 letters of reference, the applicant's curriculum vita, and a letter of support from one of the JILA Fellows confirming that the resources and facilities are available and describing the benefit of the visit to the research work of JILA.
- Deadline. Applications for visits starting any time during the nominal 2013-2014 academic year should be received by 1 November 2012. The Fellows will announce the awards in January 2013.
- Evaluation Criteria. Each applicant will be evaluated using criteria that include the quality of the applicant's research program, the overlap of that research program with JILA's program, and the availability of funds. Final decisions on those invited to become a JILA Visting Fellow are made by the JILA Fellows. Written invitations are typically issued by the JILA Chair.
JILA Distinguished Visitor Program.
This formal program provides financial support for visits to JILA by prominent scientists who come to JILA for one to five weeks.
- Financial Support. Each Distinguished Visitor will receive subsistence expenses of approximately $1,250 per week for local expenses and per diem. In addition, JILA will provide reimbursement for the cost of economy round-trip airfare to and from the visitor's home institution.
- Application. Each prospective visitor should submit a research plan describing what the visitor hopes to accomplish during the visit, what special resources or facilities would be needed, and the value that the visit would provide to the JILA research programs. In addition, the application must include 3 letters of reference, the applicant's curriculum vita, and a letter of support from one of the JILA Fellows, confirming that the resources and facilities are available and describing the benefit of the visit to the research work of JILA.

JILA Scientific Visitors and Invited Guests.
This informal program may provide financial support for visits to JILA by scientists who come to JILA for varying amounts of time; from a few days to a few months, as arranged by the JILA Fellow who issues the invitation. Typical visitors in this program come to JILA to share their expertise and research collaboratively.
- Application. There is no formal application process although it is recommended that scientists interested in this program should contact the JILA Fellow with whom they wish to collaborate and provide application materials as requested. Materials will likely include at a minimum: curriculum vita and a short description of the proposed collaboration with one of JILA’s research programs. The application normally would be preceded by informal discussions with one or more Fellows of the institute.
- Financial Support (if available). Financial support will vary and may include reimbursement for the cost of economy round-trip airfare to and from the visitor's home institution; subsistence expenses for local costs; per diem and/or provision of JILA support services during the visit.
- Deadlines. Applications for this program will be considered on a regular basis. An applicant may propose a visit up to one year in the future.
