Guide to Email at JILA

The web page https://jilawww.colorado.edu/member/cgi-bin/jila_acct.cgi is a good starting point for getting an account at JILA.  The account request form link will begin the process of getting email set up.

Email Accounts:

All JILA members get an account on our central Linux server, jilau1.colorado.edu.   Email on jilau1 can be accessed with pine from an ssh terminal connection, or with client programs such as Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook, or Apple Mail.  jilau1 will also relay your mail from off campus after a successful login, so it can be used for outgoing mail while traveling.

With each new account on jilau1, the user is also given the email addresses 'username@jila.colorado.edu' and 'first.last@jila.colorado.edu'.  For example: wifl3485@jila.colorado.edu or wilma.flintstone@jila.colorado.edu.  If you would like additional email aliases, please email unix@jila.colorado.edu with your name and requested alias.  Mail sent to an @jila.colorado.edu address will be received on jilau1.

Email Routing at CU:

It may be necessary for you to take action to ensure that email sent to your different addresses on campus (e.g., wilma.flintstone@colorado.edu vs wilma.flintstone@jila.colorado.edu) are directed to accounts that you read regularly.  You can control where messages sent to your @colorado.edu address will be delivered by by setting your "mailhome".  To do so, log in to cuidm.colorado.edu and click on "Manage my email addresses".  If you want to change your "Current email delivery location", type your preferred address in the "New email delivery location" boxes near the bottom of the page, and then click "Save".  If you would like messages sent to your @jila.colorado.edu address to be forwarded to a different address, you can create a file called ".forward" in your home directory on jilau1 containing the target address.  Or, email unix@jila.colorado.edu and we can set up an alias to your preferred address.  It's possible to create a mail loop if your mailhome and .forward aren't set correctly, so please consult with the Computing Group if you have any questions about what setup is right for you.

JILA Email Directory:

It is important that your email address be listed in the JILA directory.  When you receive a jilau1 account for email, be sure to inform Reception of your email address so they can add you to the directory.  Without this entry, you will not receive news or be able to submit purchase requests, among other things.  If you wish to use an existing non-JILA account for email, you can provide it to Reception as soon as you get a chance.  After you request an email account, please wait until the account is completed so you can be certain of the username before informing Reception, but please remember to tell them your email address once you receive it.  You will receive a form in your JILA mailbox with your your new username and password once the account is ready.

Viruses and attachments:

JILA Computing scans all incoming email for virus signatures and suspicious attachments.  Some attachment file types are disallowed (.scr, .vbs are two examples).Your best defense against viruses is to always view unexpected attachments with extreme suspicion.

SPAM:

In an effort to reduce SPAM (or unsolicited commercial email) JILA Computing offers SpamAssassin service on jilau1.  SpamAssassin is a program which tags potential SPAM using a sophisticated detection system.  Tagged messages can then be directed to a special folder for you to review and empty from time to time.  Since a tiny fraction of ‘real’ messages may be tagged as SPAM, it is not safe to simply delete them without at least a weekly review.  If you get more than a few SPAM emails a day in your Inbox you might want to try customizing your personal SpamAssassin settings.  Email unix@jila.colorado.edu for more details.

Web Mail:

You can access your mail on jilau1 from any web browser at https://jilau1.colorado.edu/webmail.  If you generally read email with pine or an IMAP client you should also be able to use the web interface to see your mail.  However if you are using a POP client there will be some conflicts.  Please contact us for help before proceeding.

CU ITS also offers webmail.  ITS’s webmail info can be found at: http://www.colorado.edu/its/quickstart/students/email.html and the main page is located at http://webmail.colorado.edu/.
