Breaking News: "Frequency Comb reaches extreme ultraviolet"
Physicists in the US have created an optical frequency comb that operates
in the extreme ultraviolet (XUV). Touted as the first practical comb to
work in this region of the spectrum, the device could be used to look for
tiny variations in the fine-structure constant and other physical
constants that could point to new physics. An XUV comb could also be used
to create better atomic clocks and new techniques for atomic spectroscopy.

"Scientists confirm first frequency comb to probe ultraviolet wavelengths"
Physicists at JILA have created the first "frequency comb" in the extreme ultraviolet band of the spectrum, high-energy light less than 100 nm in wavelength. Laser-generated frequency combs are the most accurate method available for precisely measuring frequencies, or colors, of light. In reaching the new band of the spectrum, the JILA experiments demonstrated for the first time a very fine mini-comb-like structure within each subunit, or harmonic, of the larger comb, drastically sharpening the measurement tool.
