JILA Monsters: Monsters Victorious
The JILA Monsters muscled their way to a much needed victory last night, rolling over the Bad Latitudes 23-9 and snapping a two game losing streak. The Monsters are now 5-3 on the season at the All-Star break.
Their bats hotter than spit on a griddle, the Monsters batted around in
three separate innings.  Juan Pino and "Dandy" Don Woodraska each hit
safely in all five attempts, while Laura Sinclair and Carrie Weidner
posted three triples between them.  One of these, by Weidner, was done in typical JILA style, as she hit a nominal single and then -- by dint of
sharp eyes, quick brain, and fleet feet -- fearlessly advanced to second,
then to third, as the Latitudes' errant throws followed her. Everyone else
on the team poked a hard shot though the infield at least once to land
safely on base.  Debbie Jin, in particular, has nearly perfected her hard
line drive down the left-field line, and saw one land safely amid helpless
Latitude fielders.  This demonstration of pinpoint accuracy has tongues
wagging throughout the league.  Other hits were not so subtle, as for
example Ed Meyer's 3-run homer in the third.
The Lads showed some spark in the fourth inning, and scored all nine
of their runs in this frame.  Otherwise, they were held in check by
the Monsters' crisp glovework.  Third basewoman Laura Sinclar backhanded a sharp grounder, only to find a Latitudes player charging in her direction, a player that she quickly slapped the tag on, ending his dreams of finding a safe haven on the bag.  Pitcher Ed Meyer caught a screaming line drive up the middle.  So hard was the ball hit, that he seemingly caught it before it left the bat, in violation of causality.  Meyer also closed out three separate innings on strikeouts.  Catcher Carrie Weidner made not one, but two putouts in the final inning, throwing her mask to the ground, sprinting after foul popflies, and pulling them into her eager glove.  For these defensive plays and her inspired night on the bases, Weidner was awarded Agilent Technologies Player of the Game Honors; she will receive a custom-synthesized frequency of her choice, courtesy of Agilent.
The Monsters are off next week, the return on July 10 to face their
division rivals, the Thunderbunnies.  Gametime is 9PM, at the Mapleton
Fields.
